The Swartberg Pass, the Rubicon of gravel road passes, 1585m above sea level and 663m difference in altitude over 9km’s on the Southern side and 850m over 13,5km on the Northern side, was built by Sir Thomas Bain from 1883 to 1886 at a cost of     14 500 Pounds Sterling.

To Hell and Back Tour

Three nights, two days, 130km

The only way from the south to The Hell is over the Swartberg Pass and you follow the same route from Blue Lily as for the one-day tour to Prince Albert but turn 3km from the top on the Northern side of the Swartberg Pass onto the Otto du Plessis road.  The difference in altitude from the top of the Swartberg Pass to our destination in The Hell is 1158m over 46km.  But don’t be disappointed if you have to climb a moderate 3,5km in this so called downhill!

The Hell keeps the best for the second day because if you want to get out of there, you’ll have to climb 360m over 3km, first thing in the morning!  We will not let you suffer and will spoil you with lots of refreshments during the day, all the way back to Blue Lily. (R 3020.00 / rider. Includes two nights, breakfast and dinner at Blue Lily, one night, breakfast and dinner in The Hell, drinks/snacks during the day and support vehicle. Klein Karoo To Coast

Five nights, four days, 343km

Day one:        Blue Lily to Rooiberg Lodge, 90km

The first day of the tour is a 447m drop over 48km, a really “cool” start before having “refreshments” at De Krans wine cellar. From De Krans you go downhill until the start of the Rooiberg Pass. For the next 6km you have to climb 476m before a fast and scenic 505m drop over 7km awaits you. The last 12km to Rooiberg Lodge is more than roller coaster on a well surfaced gravel road.

Day two:         Rooiberg Lodge to Herbertsdale, 84km

From Rooiberg Lodge to Cloete’s Pass you will experience more of a Karoo feeling with an altitude that varies between 230m and 260m over the 62km Karoo stretch. Cloete’s Pass is part of the Outeniqua Mountain range and the environment changes drastically over the next 7,5km with a climb of 260m. Once you are over Cloete’s Pass it’s a 14,5km downhill through dairy farms to Herbertsdale, but you need to brake quickly for a stop at Mike and Jenny’s bar on a macadamia farm!

Day three:      Herbertsdale to Geelhoutboom, 80km

This is a tough day! A 356m climb over 9km through the fynbos of the Outeniqua Mountain, and then it’s downhill to Groot Brak River, 2km from the sea, where you can have refreshments, or go for a swim. Once you are at the sea side its time to turn back to the Klein Karoo, but first a moderate climb of 197m over 7km before you reach an average altitude of 190m for the last 12km to Geelhoutboom for an overnight stop.

Day four:        Geelhoutboom to Buffelsdrift, 89km

It is time to celebrate your climbing legs! For the warm up we take a 15km detour through Jonkersberg Pine forest before taking on the Montagu Pass with a climb of 405m over 5km and when it’s done you are in the Klein Karoo. You go downhill of 354m over the last 69km to Buffelsdrift, from where we will transport you back to Blue Lily. An unforgettable journey!! (R 7000.00 / rider. Includes two nights, breakfast and dinner at Blue Lily, three nights, breakfast and dinner at overnight places, drinks/snacks during the day and support vehicle.
